Cool Hand Luke

School of Indie Rock

In my later years of high school, I was heavily influenced by Sunny Day Real Estate and Fugazi both in the way I thought about music and the way I started to play drums. I’ve already mentioned both of them in previous posts, so I’ll move on from high school to my college days at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). That’s where I met Brandon and Jason and where Cool Hand Luke began.

In my first year of college I got really into hard core and also into extremely wussy emo. These two seem worlds apart sonically, but somehow the two scenes coexisted hand in hand. This was the indie rock of my day. Bad recordings, bad vocals, and a lot of passion. Almost all of my friends shared an equal love for both The Get Up Kids and Zao at some point.

My interest in Sunny Day and Fugazi only grew in college and I started to find other bands that inspired me in the same way. For the most part, no one compared to them in my mind, but I did find some truly amazing, inspiring records. In my next few posts, I’ll share some of the records that I loved in my college days. Some of them have not aged well and have rather drifted into oblivion. Some of them, however, are still untouchable, groundbreaking masterpieces in my opinion.
